If ringtone sound works, compare a normal call with speakerphone. Do not increase volume to compensate for distortion.

If only calls crackle or fail, compare normal reception at another location when convenient. Report call-only versus local-sound failure.

Check the result
- Save local ringtone output and any call-only pattern. For call-only trouble, include reception/location when speaking with the carrier or Apple.
- Persistent silent ringtone output or a dimmed speaker control needs Apple assessment.
Stop conditions
- Stop using and charging equipment with swelling, casing separation, smoke, a burning smell or suspected battery damage. Do not open or press on it.
- Set damaged accessories aside. Do not open mains adapters or force connectors.
- Do not erase, reset, flash firmware or bypass a lock as a default diagnostic step.
