TrackPoint movement, buttons and middle-button scroll

Identify which TrackPoint control is affected without removing keys or replacing the cap.

Version 2.0.0 · About 20 minutes to organize observations

Planning estimate for recording observations; excludes charging, backups, drying and service. Not a measured repair time.

Preparation guide

  1. Use gentle sideways pressure on the red pointing-stick cap, parallel to the keyboard. Record pointer response without pulling the cap or using a hard object.

  2. Inspect TrackPoint enablement through the installed Windows/Lenovo mouse controls. Use Settings search for Mouse if the manual’s Windows 10 menu path differs.

  3. Compare the separate left and right TrackPoint buttons on an ordinary local control. Record a button-specific failure separately from pointer movement.

  4. For scrolling, hold the dotted middle button while applying vertical or horizontal pressure to the stick. Test a scrollable local document and then another supported app.

  5. Preserve movement, click and scroll results separately. Ask Lenovo about persistent control failure; cap/key/keyboard replacement is outside this record.

Check the result

  • Middle-button scrolling follows the model’s documented action.
  • Control-specific failure is separated from app behavior.
Stop conditions
  • Stop using and charging equipment with swelling, casing separation, smoke, a burning smell or suspected battery damage. Do not open or press on it.
  • Set damaged accessories aside. Do not open mains adapters or force connectors.
  • Do not erase, reset, flash firmware or bypass a lock as a default diagnostic step.
