Inspect the cable ends and adapter. Use a direct wall connection and look into the Lightning opening without inserting tools. Set damaged equipment aside.

Keep the outlet, adapter and cable fixed for the first observation. Record whether the battery indicator appears after 30 minutes.

If safe equipment is available, compare another cable while keeping the adapter and outlet fixed, then another adapter with the chosen cable. Record unavailable combinations as not tested.

If the phone still will not start, quickly press Volume up, then Volume down; hold Side until the Apple logo appears. Save any accessible work first.

Check the result
- Keep the exact working combination and back up once the phone is accessible. A changed response identifies a useful external-power lead.
- Ask Apple to assess charging with the recorded cable/adapter comparison. No single part is identified by a blank screen.
Stop conditions
- Stop using and charging equipment with swelling, casing separation, smoke, a burning smell or suspected battery damage. Do not open or press on it.
- Set damaged accessories aside. Do not open mains adapters or force connectors.
- Do not erase, reset, flash firmware or bypass a lock as a default diagnostic step.
