Backup coverage before repair

Separate device backup, synced content and app-specific gaps before a service handoff.

Version 2.0.0 · About 20 minutes to organize observations

Planning estimate for recording observations; excludes charging, backups, drying and service. Not a measured repair time.

Preparation guide

  1. Find Backup in the installed Settings app. Current Google guidance uses Google services → Backup; older labels can differ. Review Backup details for included apps and data.

  2. Check the reported last backup date/completion locally. If using Google Drive on your own browser, Storage → Backups lists device backups and modification times. Record status only.

  3. Check needed photos, videos and contacts in their respective services privately. Google distinguishes these synced items from device backup; one completed device backup does not verify them.

  4. Review any app data or local-only files outside the shown coverage. Use that app’s own backup/export support or an existing safe copy method; mark unverified categories rather than assuming inclusion.

  5. Tell the provider which coverage gaps remain. Back up before every repair even when using Repair Mode, because the repair may require a reset or storage-affecting work.

Schematic gates: Android 14 December 2023 update or later, at least 2 GB free, verified backup, System Repair mode, then private owner authentication. Repair may still require a reset.

Check the result

  • Keep the confirmed backup and content-access evidence available privately. Bring remaining exclusions, even if none are known, to the provider.
  • Discuss missing data protection with Google or the repair provider before approving work that can erase storage.
Stop conditions
  • Stop using and charging equipment with swelling, casing separation, smoke, a burning smell or suspected battery damage. Do not open or press on it.
  • Set damaged accessories aside. Do not open mains adapters or force connectors.
  • Do not erase, reset, flash firmware or bypass a lock as a default diagnostic step.
