Repair Mode: eligibility, backup and handoff

Verify the actual Repair Mode requirements and preserve data readiness before handing over a Pixel 7.

Preparation guide

  1. Check Android version and update level locally in Settings → About phone. Repair Mode requires Android 14 with the December 2023 update or later. Earlier or unknown OS is not confirmed eligible.

  2. Check available storage locally and confirm at least 2 GB free. Do not delete the only copy of needed files to reach this threshold.

  3. Verify a backup before repair. Repair Mode does not guarantee data preservation: the provider may reset the phone, and storage-affecting parts work can require deletion.

  4. When ready for service, use Settings → System → Repair mode. Follow the screen and authenticate privately with the existing screen-lock credential, then allow the restart.

  5. Do not share the PIN, password or pattern and do not create a new PIN inside Repair Mode. Remove and keep a physical SIM before shipping; ask the provider about any uncompleted preparation.

  6. After return, leave Repair Mode through System → Repair mode and authenticate yourself. Changes made inside Repair Mode are removed on exit; verify your original data and symptom afterward.

Check the result

  • Record eligibility and backup readiness. Enable Repair Mode only when ready for service; the provider must still confirm whether its repair needs a reset.
  • Ask Google or the provider about missing Repair Mode, unprotected data or the repair’s reset requirement before handoff.
Stop conditions
  • Stop using and charging equipment with swelling, casing separation, smoke, a burning smell or suspected battery damage. Do not open or press on it.
  • Set damaged accessories aside. Do not open mains adapters or force connectors.
  • Do not erase, reset, flash firmware or bypass a lock as a default diagnostic step.
